FAQs
Will KilnShield work if my kiln already has damaged or crumbling soft bricks?
Yes.KilnShield is designed to protect and prevent further damage to soft firebrick that has already experienced wear from loading and unloading.
While it will not rebuild missing brick, it helps slow deterioration, reduce additional abrasion, and extend the usable life of your kiln interior.
Do I leave KilnShield in place when firing my kiln?
No. KilnShield must be removed before firing.
KilnShield is heat-resistant, but it is not designed to be fired with the kiln and will melt at firing temperatures.
Leaving it in place during firing can also prevent the kiln from sealing properly, which may interfere with ventilation and firing performance.
KilnShield is used only during loading and unloading to protect soft bricks from mechanical damage.
Why can’t KilnShield stay in the kiln during firing?
KilnShield is engineered as a protective barrier, not a permanent kiln interior component.
- It is heat resistant, but not firing-safe
- It prevents the kiln lid or door from sealing fully
- Improper sealing can disrupt airflow and ventilation
Removing KilnShield before firing ensures safe operation, proper airflow, and consistent firing results.
Will KilnShield affect my kiln’s performance or ventilation?
When used correctly (removed before firing), KilnShield does not affect kiln performance.
However, firing with KilnShield in place can interfere with ventilation and airflow, which is why removal before firing is essential.
When used as intended, KilnShield protects your kiln without impacting how it fires.
Will KilnShield fit my kiln? Can it be trimmed?
KilnShield cannot be trimmed or cut to size.
Instead, we offer multiple sizes designed specifically for 10-sided and 12-sided kilns, allowing you to choose the option that best fits your kiln model.
If you’re unsure which size you need, we’re happy to help you select the correct fit.
Is KilnShield worth it compared to kiln brick repair or replacement?
Replacing soft bricks or repairing kiln interiors can be costly and time-consuming. KilnShield is a preventative solutionthat helps reduce ongoing damage, extend kiln life, and protect your investment—especially during frequent loading and unloading.
